Jury deadlocks in murder trial of Fresno gang member accused of shooting rival on Easter

The murder trial of Fresno gang member Jerel “Relli” Stanfield appeared to have all of the elements for a conviction: the prosecution said he had the murder weapon on him when police shot and apprehended him in an alley.

But after about 12 hours of deliberations over four days, a Fresno County Superior Court jury on Thursday told the judge they could not convict Stanfield, 28, in the Easter killing of a rival four years ago. Continue reading

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Moments after Fresno police shot a suspect at the end of a chase, a weapon popped into view, tying the suspect to the death of a rival. Jerel Stanfield is on trial for murder because of it, four years after the police shooting and his arrest triggered protests.

Someone shot William Simpson to death on Easter Sunday 2013 as he slept in his car, and his pregnant girlfriend shielded her young son. But Stanfield’s defense attorney says nobody saw who did it, and police framed Stanfield for the crime. Continue reading

Gang member whose shooting triggered anti-police protests is now on trial for murder

A high-ranking southwest Fresno gang member whose shooting by police sparked protests and threats against officers is now on trial, accused of gunning down a rival on Easter Sunday four years ago as the victim’s girlfriend tried to shield her child.

Defendant Jerel Stanfield, killed 23-year-old William Simpson on March 31, 2013, to promote the Strother Boys street gang, a prosecutor said Thursday in opening statements of the defendant’s trial in Fresno Superior Court. FRESNO FUGITIVE MURDER SUSPECT IN JANESSA CASE SURRENDERS TO POLICE

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The last outstanding suspect in the murder of 9-year-old Janessa Ramirez has reappeared, but not for long. A day after Action News explored the trail Donte Hawkins left behind, we followed him back to Fresno for his arrest.

Hawkins was on the run since January when police named him as one of the gunmen in a gang firefight. A stray bullet struck and killed Janessa Ramirez and although police don’t believe Hawkins fired it, he could still be blamed for the girl’s murder. Continue reading
